I learnt a new unspoken rule recently.
Working from Home = Not working
I have switched to working from home since February and have been enjoying quite a bit of flexibility in my working hours. But hey, I'm working and although I'm getting some very weeny income out of it, it still means i'm working ... part-time at least.
But then this fact doesn't seem to get into some of my friends' heads. And as far as I refuse to admit, the equation of 'working at home = not working" has been generally approved and widely accepted. How many times have I heard them saying "so good that you are not working ..." and how many times have I monotonously replied the same "I'm actually working ...".
While I try to laugh it off most of the time, working from home indeed has some advantages.
1. I can work in my pyjamas and without a tinge of makeup. No one is looking anyway.
2. Time is so much flexible and I can squeeze in a jogging session anytime. I would love to think that i'm healthier now. And of course, I don't have to moan and curse when I'm forced to step out in the morning rain to catch the bus.
3. I saved quite a bit on transport cost. It is quite surprising that transport can in fact cost me quite a considerable amount. My hands get tired topping up the ezlink.
Then of course, it comes with its share of disadvantages.
1. Why do I always feel so poor? But then, it was a tiny improvement from my previous part-time job though. I'm paid slightly more, plus the fact that I don't have to travel at all. :)
2. I missed having colleagues around. Though keeping in touch nowadays is made easy with msn and everything else, but it is never the same with them physically around you, popping their heads over your cubicle to share a joke, or simply indulging in serious discussion for the lunch venue.
3. Discipline! While I would think myself as quite a disciplined person, it takes so much more effort when you are working from home. Work has to be done but no one will guard on you. And suddenly, the bed looks extra inviting and burger shop 2 keeps asking you to stay for one more round.
Given its fair bit of pros and cons, I'm still quite contented in my current status. Whatever the equation is, I'm happy at least for now. :)
